FLIGHT INFORMATION
DISPLAY SYSTEM
WHAT IS IT?
The Flight Information Display System, or FIDS for short, is a project that exercises basic app wire-framing and UI/UX design to create a functional app. This project utilizes both Adobe XD and Illustrator.
how does it work?
The FIDS (Flight Information Display System) was built in Adobe XD using wireframes, which function like connected pages. We started with just a sheet of flight data and airport information, and everything else—colors, logos, and overall app design—was developed through a series of design exploration.
Some menus are structured as one long scrollable page with linked sections that let users navigate between menus (like Departures to Arrivals). XD connects these pages so when users click a button or icon (like the globe for language selection or support for extra information), it automatically takes them to the correct page.
How did you design it?
Apart from working in XD to make the app itself functional, there was a lot of study that went behind making the design choices themselves. I asked myself questions like, '“How should I prioritize the information?” Or, “How do I reduce redundancy and make it as clean as possible?” Asking these questions beforehand makes a lot of design choices easier to make especially with a base to work off of.
what did you learn?
I learned a lot about how having a good design brief or basis really helps to engage your design decisions later on. I got a lot of good experience being able to ‘check my work’ live on a smartphone device to see how the app was really working in real time, and gained a new bug for wanting to work further in UI/UX design later on in my design career.
the result…
The FIDS is a working prototype/demo application that is viewable on smartphones and web clients via the link below. XD will guide you through the app by highlighting where buttons are located on the screen to take you through the different pages or screens through the app itself.
